Deployed Forces Fitness

CNIC's Waterfront Fitness Program supports the Navy's objectives of mission readiness and operational effectiveness by Bringing Fitness to the Fleet through our assistance in command PT and FEP development for afloat commands.  Other programs offered by Waterfront Fitness team members include pre-deployment education courses which provide fitness, health and nutrition programs to deck plate Sailors and providing resources and tools to assist afloat commands in improving overall Physical Readiness.

Bringing Fitness To The Fleet

Physical fitness of sailors is an essential and critical component of operational readiness and maintaining our fleet readiness. It is crucial that the continued importance of individual readiness be met. The Waterfront Fitness Team have been providing assistance for the deploying forces in the Mid-Atlantic Region since November 2006. Their program was created to “Bring Fitness to the Fleet” by providing health, fitness, and nutrition to sailors at the deckplate including programs, resources, and tools that assist the command in improving their Physical Readiness Program. The newest initiatives are the Group Exercise Instructor Courses that are designed to certify sailors in conducting Cycling, Step Training, Cardio Kickboxing and Circuit Training. Providing certified Navy Fitness Group Exercise Instructors give the sailors an additional resource for providing and participating in safe and effective PT while deployed.

Course Descriptions

GROUP EXERCISE TRAINING
These courses are open to any Sailor who would be interested in teaching these types of workout to your command as part of your Physical Readiness Program:

CYCLING
This course will give you the tools and resources you need to provide cycling classes onboard your ship and will offer your crew additional options for physical fitness. We will give you
not only the science behind the training but also the cycles and music needed to provide the program. This is an eight-hour, one-day course.

CARDIO KICKBOXING
Cardio Kickboxing workouts are a combination of boxing, kickboxing, and some martial arts movements, along with traditional aerobic skills. There are many styles and variations of this practice, but we will focus on introducing basic movements with emphasis on safe, effective execution for your diverse group PTs. This is a four-hour, five-day course.

STEP TRAINING
Step aerobics is a choreographed routine of stepping up and down on a rectangular platform (or, in the case of BOSU, a domed, flexible apparatus) with the beat of the music. Many classes combine step aerobics with light weights, jumping rope, funk aerobics (like ZUMBA) and more. This is a four-hour, five-day course.

YOGA
Yoga is one of the oldest mind/body activities in the civilized world, and the concept of union between mind and body is a fundamental principle in its practice. In this five-day course, you will learn 42 asanas to create a basic HATHA yoga practice. This is a four-hour, five-day course.

PFA PREP
This course will focus specifically on improving your Sailors’ PRT scores and BCA through basic nutrition guidance and specific exercise principles and guidelines to improve push-ups, curl-ups, and cardio events.

PERFORMANCE ATHLETIC TRAINING (P. A.T.)
Learn how to train your Sailors to achieve their performance fitness goals and how to instruct improved 1.5-mile time, gearing up for obstacle/fitness challenge races, and competing in recreational/intramural sport leagues. The aim is to improve muscular performance through athletic skill training and to improve cardiovascular performance/endurance. Major focal points of P.A.T. include speed and agility techniques as well as maximizing muscular power output and explosiveness. You don’t have to be an athlete to train like an athlete!

THE ART OF STRENGTH (A.O.S.)
Improve and enhance your strength training instruction through the Art of Strength. This comprehensive instruction will allow you to train basic free weight strength and conditioning exercises properly, providing your members an effective and safe workout. Other topics include:

  • How to maximize your gains and promote muscle growth
  • The importance of lean muscle in men and movement in men and women
  • How to avoid plateaus
  • Improper techniques to avoid

TRX
This training will provide you with basic TRX fundamentals and skills to help you design classes appropriate for Sailors of all fitness levels. This training also encourages Sailors to work in ALL planes of motion improving performance and decreasing the risk of injury.

NOFFS
Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling System (NOFFS) combines both human performance and injury prevention strategies, resulting in safer training and positive human performance outcomes. The exercises used in NOFFS are designed to replicate the activities Sailors perform their operational duties: lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying.
