The fitness center is named for the late Senator John H. Chafee (1922-1999) who served as an enlisted
Marine in World War II, a captain during the Korean War, 66th governor of Rhode Island, Secretary of
the Navy (SECNAV) and as a U.S. Senator.
The John H. Chafee fitness center offers a variety of fitness programs and equipment to all authorized
patrons (active-duty personnel, reservists, retirees, dependents and DoD civilians). Nationally certified
trainers are available for free group/personal appointments. The fitness center has an indoor running
track, 25-meter pool, basketball and racquetball courts. There is 100% ID check at this military facility.
Tuesday & Thursday 9:45-10:30 a.m.
This chair-based class is designed for those with injuries, limited range of motion and flexibility,
and those seeking to improve their strength and conditioning. We focus on building core strength and
muscular tone, achieving better balance and posture, and improving cardiovascular fitness and
coordination through a combination of seated and standing exercises. A variety of tools such as
dumbbells, resistance bands, Swiss balls, and medicine balls are used to keep the workouts new and
YOUTH FITNESS ORIENATIONS
Children ages 12 through 15 may use the fitness facility after receiving an orientation
from a fitness specialist. Orientations include: cardiovascular equipment, Magnum
selectorized weighted machines and functional equipment located on the fitness floor.
Parent/guardian must accompany the child during the orientation. Stop by the John H.
Chafee Fitness Center and fill out a “Request a Trainer” form. Orientations are held
on Saturdays & Sundays between 10-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sign ups are
required and space is limited.
