NAVSTA Great Lakes - School Liaison Program

The School Liaison Officer’s primary function is to serve as a conduit between parents, educators and the command so that military-connected children experience a seamless transition during the transfer between schools. Most military children move every 2.9 years and can attend up to nine different schools by graduation. Consistency and retention of educational goals is a primary goal for families when planning to PCS.

The School Liaison Officer (SLO) can provide military families, educators, and installation commanders with resources as they work together in providing a supportive and positive educational environment for children of military families.  In addition, we offer a wide spectrum of services, enabling families to become more involved in their child's educational experience. The SLO’s main areas of focus include assisting families by:
 • Providing information on local schools and boundaries
 • Answer questions about school enrollment options
 • Understanding home schooling regulations and support
 • Supporting families with Inbound/outbound school transfers
 • Helping families understand and navigate the special education process
 • Providing military, Department of Education, and community agency referrals
 • Assisting with post-secondary preparation and college readiness

NAVSTA Great Lakes - Veterinary Clinic

The Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) is located in bldg. 43-H and provides routine care to pets of all military service members and retirees, military working dogs, government working dogs and mascots. Please call to make appointments. While this facility exists for government-owned working dogs and mascots, routine care to pets of military personnel is provided as time and resources allow. Call for appointments. The VTF does NOT treat emergencies; it is highly encouraged you maintain a civilian veterinarian for these purposes.

Follow us on Facebook: Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility

Lake County Residents - Including Navy Housing:
All residents of Lake County must register their animals with Lake County officials (847) 949-9725. All animals receiving a rabies vaccination at the Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility must register and pay the fee at the time of the animal's vaccination.

Authorized Users:
All military, retirees and family members with a valid ID card are eligible to use the VTF. Those eligible to use the VTF may bring pets in for annual vaccinations, fecal testing for intestinal parasites, heartworm testing, and minor skin infections. Appointments are necessary and there is a charge for services provided. Shampoo, ear cleaning products, heartworm preventatives and flea control products for dogs and cats are available for purchase. Please call to make an appointment, or for more information.

Medical Treatment for Your Family Pet
The Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) provides basic health care for family pets of current and retired service members. We recommend you also maintain a relationship with a civilian veterinarian.

Services provided include, but are not limited to, routine vaccinations, testing for internal and external parasites, flea control products, heartworm testing and preventative, health certificates, treatment of certain diseases, and minor surgeries and dentals. A civilian veterinarian must see all emergencies.

If you have a family pet now or plan on getting one in the future, you should, at a minimum, ensure your animal is provided with the following preventative health measures.

ADULT DOGS annual vaccinations should include Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Corona Virus. A Rabies vaccination is given one year from the initial vaccination as recommended for puppies and then every year or three years depending on registration. Additionally, if you plan on boarding your animal anytime within the next 12 months, it's recommended to have them vaccinated against canine kennel cough, which we provide, upon request. We also encourage that all dogs be kept on heartworm preventative all year round.

ADULT CATS annual vaccinations should include Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. A Rabies vaccination is given one year from the initial vaccination as recommended for kittens and then every year or three years depending on registration. Additionally, cats can be vaccinated for the Feline Leukemia Virus, upon request.

PUPPIES and KITTENS should start their vaccinations at 6-8 weeks of age and receive their first Rabies vaccination when they are at least four months old. We recommend deworming all puppies and kittens during their puppy/kitten visits.

If you have any further questions or would like to schedule an appointment for your animal, please contact the Great Lakes VTF at 847-688-5740 EXT 4.

If you have an appointment please bring a stool sample with you.

NAVSTA Norfolk - Teen Program

Teen Programs are recreational programs that provide quality “out-of-school” activities for pre-teens and teens. Teen Programs are offered to meet the needs of the command members. Transportation may be offered by the YP or local school system. Teen Programs are DoD certified, affiliated with Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), and offer 4-H programs.

All Teen Programs are designed to offer recreational-based experiential learning opportunities that enhance (rather than duplicate) the school day by integrating age and developmentally appropriate activities based on the knowledge of youth development, and the needs and interests of the pre-teens and teens enrolled in the program. Equally as important, Teen Programs provide important social/emotional growth opportunities that focus on character development, leadership skills, communication, and self-esteem.

The Naval Station Norfolk teen program builds character through everyday leadership and guidance in behavior and attitude. Young people of all backgrounds join together in wholesome recreation and companionship. Our professional staff provides positive adult mentors and role models to help teens succeed in school, stay healthy, learn important life skills, pursue interests in arts and sports and explore vocational choices. Most importantly our teen program shows youngsters that someone cares and wants them to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Our teen program offers exceptional trips and activities that give our teens bigger outlooks on life. We engage in dynamic discussions centered around developing into strong, positive adults. The Norfolk Teen Program is the only teen program in the region that is Accredited through the Council of Accreditation.

We offer:

  • Trips to fun and educational places
  • Leadership clubs and seminars
  • Volunteer activities
  • New Student Orientations

Assistance for Surviving Families

In 2014 the Navy Gold Star Program was established and expanded throughout the US to create local relationships with Gold Star Families. Navy Gold Star Coordinators are the link to the long-term survivor assistance process that allows us to assist survivors with issues or questions that may surface months or even years after the loss of their loved one.

Maintaining a connection with Survivors allows us to reach them with critical information such as upcoming Memorial events, the release of new benefits, or the issuance of posthumous award that can result in changes with state leadership and legislation.

Eligibility

Personnel eligible to participate in the NGS program include the widow, parents and the next of kin. The term "widow" includes widower ; the term "parents" includes mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, mother through adoption, father through adoption, and foster parents who stood in loco parentis; the term "next of kin" only includes children, brothers, sisters, half-brothers, and half-sisters; and the term "children" includes stepchildren and children through adoption.

If you are a Gold Star family member and would like to connect with a Gold Star Coordinator or learn more about the program, please contact us so we can better serve you and your family.

Navy Gold Star is the Navy’s official program for providing long-term support to surviving families of Sailors who pass while on Active Duty.

If you are visiting this page because you are a surviving family member of a deceased service member, please accept our most heartfelt sympathy and gratitude for your loved one’s service and sacrifice in defending our nation.

Navy Gold Star is an inclusive program – regardless of your loved one’s military branch, location, or manner of death. Our commitment to you is that regardless of the branch of service, we will provide you with support and help you locate your branch’s survivor services. Navy Gold Star support coordinators provide dedicated outreach and support when, and for as long as, you desire. Our coordinators are located all over the United States and are ready to help you in any way they can.

Your loved one has given the ultimate sacrifice, and we know that there is nothing we can say or do that will completely comfort you in your loss. There is no greater calling than to serve our nation with honor. We are dedicated to delivering on the promise of taking care of our own by providing support to surviving families. For us, there is no greater duty than to support the families of those who have died in service to our nation.

Navy Wounded Warrior - Safe Harbor

Navy Wounded Warrior (NWW) -- Safe Harbor is the Navy's sole organization for coordinating the non-medical care of seriously wounded, ill and injured Sailors and Coast Guardsmen, and providing resources and support to their families and caregivers. Through proactive leadership, the program provides individually-tailored assistance designed to optimize the success of the wounded warriors' recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration activities.

NWW helps Sailors and Coast Guardsmen return to duty, and, when that's not possible, the program works collaboratively with federal agencies, and state and local organizations to ease wounded warriors back into their communities.

How does NWW operate?
Regional NWW non-medical care management teams work with wounded warriors and their families to identify their goals and develop plans to achieve them. The teams are led by a regional director, and recovery care coordinators oversee the development and execution of wounded warriors' Comprehensive Recovery Plans (CRPs). Non-medical care managers anticipate enrollees' daily non-medical needs and resolve any issues that surface during the recovery process.

NWW headquarters, which is based in Washington, D.C., is divided into four components: Policy and Enrollment; Quality Assurance; Program Support; and Pay and Entitlements.

What is a CRP?
A CRP is an individualized plan developed by the non-medical care management team, the service member and his or her family or caregiver, which identifies and prioritizes their goals. The CRP is a tool that helps service members remain on course throughout recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration.

How do Sailors and Coast Guardsmen enroll in NWW?

  • CO, XO, CMC/COB spouses, and Chaplains are also encouraged to attend.
  • Advanced trainings are provided to address current issues and better prepare ombudsmen for their duties.

The Role of the Command Ombudsman
The Navy Family Ombudsman is vital to the welfare of the command's families, and in this unique role, as an officially appointed volunteer, the duties are wide-ranging. The Ombudsman has been trained to know when to provide information, when to be a referral source and how to be receptive to family members when they call.

Ombudsmen serve as the primary communications link between the families and the command, and the channel of official information from the command to the families.

Disseminate timely and critical information, regularly, through newsletters, care-line/info-lines, telephone trees, and e-mail.

Supply information about and referrals to military and civilian support organizations like, Fleet and Family Support Centers, American Red Cross, Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, Chaplains, medical facilities, and legal assistance offices. These organizations are valuable resources in obtaining assistance for command family members.

Provide support to family members seeking professional assistance and refer them for counseling. Ombudsmen, in their official role, are not counselors or social workers.

Act as an advocate for the command families, using knowledge of the system, can help access the appropriate level of the chain of command for intervention and forward suitable requests or grievances while exercising confidentiality.

Support command-sponsored groups and activities and advertise support group activities, as permitted by the command.

Navy Ombudsman Basic Training
This training consists of 9 modules that help official command ombudsmen and command leadership team members work effectively with their commands. Workshops provide resource avenues for helping families through crisis and daily living. Open to Ombudsmen, COs, XOs, Chaplains, CMCs, COBs, and their spouses.

Navy Ombudsman Advanced Training
This training provides guidance, additional resources, and training by subject matter experts on various topics to assist with the varied challenges of commands and family members. Both new and experienced Ombudsmen are encouraged to attend.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What is the Ombudsman Program?
It is a command operated program intended to improve communication between the command and a sailor's family members. Most importantly, it keeps members informed about command policy and the command aware of family concerns. A major function of the Ombudsman is providing information and referral services to the families.
  2. How do I become an Ombudsman?
You can apply for this position when the command advertises for volunteers or request to be placed on a standby list of volunteers for future consideration when a position(s) becomes available. Volunteers are screened, selected and appointed by the Commanding Officer. A board, which can include the Command Master Chief, Executive Officer, current Ombudsman, and/ or other command members, as directed, may assist the CO.
  3. What training is provided to the Ombudsman?
Ombudsman, with command support, receive Ombudsman Basic Training (OBT). OBT is a detailed course that provides required knowledge and skill development necessary to perform effectively as the Command Ombudsman. Ombudsman continues their education via additional local training.
  4. Is financial support available to Ombudsman?
The command, budget permitting, may provide supplies, equipment, and reimbursement for such expenses as childcare and mileage.
  5. Will being an Ombudsman help further my spouse's Navy career?
One of the best tools is the Navy Family Ombudsman Program Manual. The command is required to provide one to the Ombudsman. If they do not have one in stock, they can contact their supporting Fleet and Family Support Center to obtain one.
