NAVSTA Great Lakes - Veterinary Clinic

The Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) is located in bldg. 43-H and provides routine care to pets of all military service members and retirees, military working dogs, government working dogs and mascots. Please call to make appointments. While this facility exists for government-owned working dogs and mascots, routine care to pets of military personnel is provided as time and resources allow. Call for appointments. The VTF does NOT treat emergencies; it is highly encouraged you maintain a civilian veterinarian for these purposes.

Follow us on Facebook: Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility

Lake County Residents - Including Navy Housing:
All residents of Lake County must register their animals with Lake County officials (847) 949-9725. All animals receiving a rabies vaccination at the Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility must register and pay the fee at the time of the animal's vaccination.

Authorized Users:
All military, retirees and family members with a valid ID card are eligible to use the VTF. Those eligible to use the VTF may bring pets in for annual vaccinations, fecal testing for intestinal parasites, heartworm testing, and minor skin infections. Appointments are necessary and there is a charge for services provided. Shampoo, ear cleaning products, heartworm preventatives and flea control products for dogs and cats are available for purchase. Please call to make an appointment, or for more information.

Medical Treatment for Your Family Pet
The Great Lakes Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) provides basic health care for family pets of current and retired service members. We recommend you also maintain a relationship with a civilian veterinarian.

Services provided include, but are not limited to, routine vaccinations, testing for internal and external parasites, flea control products, heartworm testing and preventative, health certificates, treatment of certain diseases, and minor surgeries and dentals. A civilian veterinarian must see all emergencies.

If you have a family pet now or plan on getting one in the future, you should, at a minimum, ensure your animal is provided with the following preventative health measures.

ADULT DOGS annual vaccinations should include Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Corona Virus. A Rabies vaccination is given one year from the initial vaccination as recommended for puppies and then every year or three years depending on registration. Additionally, if you plan on boarding your animal anytime within the next 12 months, it's recommended to have them vaccinated against canine kennel cough, which we provide, upon request. We also encourage that all dogs be kept on heartworm preventative all year round.

ADULT CATS annual vaccinations should include Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. A Rabies vaccination is given one year from the initial vaccination as recommended for kittens and then every year or three years depending on registration. Additionally, cats can be vaccinated for the Feline Leukemia Virus, upon request.

PUPPIES and KITTENS should start their vaccinations at 6-8 weeks of age and receive their first Rabies vaccination when they are at least four months old. We recommend deworming all puppies and kittens during their puppy/kitten visits.

If you have any further questions or would like to schedule an appointment for your animal, please contact the Great Lakes VTF at 847-688-5740 EXT 4.

If you have an appointment please bring a stool sample with you.

NAVSTA Norfolk - Teen Program

Teen Programs are recreational programs that provide quality “out-of-school” activities for pre-teens and teens. Teen Programs are offered to meet the needs of the command members. Transportation may be offered by the YP or local school system. Teen Programs are DoD certified, affiliated with Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), and offer 4-H programs.

All Teen Programs are designed to offer recreational-based experiential learning opportunities that enhance (rather than duplicate) the school day by integrating age and developmentally appropriate activities based on the knowledge of youth development, and the needs and interests of the pre-teens and teens enrolled in the program. Equally as important, Teen Programs provide important social/emotional growth opportunities that focus on character development, leadership skills, communication, and self-esteem.

The Naval Station Norfolk teen program builds character through everyday leadership and guidance in behavior and attitude. Young people of all backgrounds join together in wholesome recreation and companionship. Our professional staff provides positive adult mentors and role models to help teens succeed in school, stay healthy, learn important life skills, pursue interests in arts and sports and explore vocational choices. Most importantly our teen program shows youngsters that someone cares and wants them to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Our teen program offers exceptional trips and activities that give our teens bigger outlooks on life. We engage in dynamic discussions centered around developing into strong, positive adults. The Norfolk Teen Program is the only teen program in the region that is Accredited through the Council of Accreditation.

We offer:

  • Trips to fun and educational places
  • Leadership clubs and seminars
  • Volunteer activities
  • New Student Orientations

Navy Wounded Warrior

Navy Wounded Warrior (NWW) is the Navy's sole organization for coordinating the non-medical care of seriously wounded, ill and injured Sailors and Coast Guardsmen, and providing resources and support to their families and caregivers. Through proactive leadership, the program provides individually-tailored assistance designed to optimize the success of the wounded warriors' recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration activities.

NWW helps Sailors and Coast Guardsmen return to duty, and, when that's not possible, the program works collaboratively with federal agencies, and state and local organizations to ease wounded warriors back into their communities.

How does NWW operate?
Regional NWW non-medical care management teams work with wounded warriors and their families to identify their goals and develop plans to achieve them. The teams are led by a regional director, and recovery care coordinators oversee the development and execution of wounded warriors' Comprehensive Recovery Plans (CRPs). Non-medical care managers anticipate enrollees' daily non-medical needs and resolve any issues that surface during the recovery process.

NWW headquarters, which is based in Washington, D.C., is divided into four components: Policy and Enrollment; Quality Assurance; Program Support; and Pay and Entitlements.

What is a CRP?
A CRP is an individualized plan developed by the non-medical care management team, the service member and his or her family or caregiver, which identifies and prioritizes their goals. The CRP is a tool that helps service members remain on course throughout recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration.

How do Sailors and Coast Guardsmen enroll in NWW?
Sailors and Coast Guardsmen may self-refer to the program or be referred by family, command leadership or medical providers.

Who is eligible for enrollment?
NWW enrollment is available to seriously wounded, ill and injured Sailors and Coast Guardsmen, including:

  • OIF/OEF/OND casualties
  • Shipboard and training accidents
  • Liberty accidents
  • Serious medical and psychological conditions (e.g, cancer, PTS)
  • What is non-medical care management?

NSA Saratoga Springs - School Liaison Officer

The School Liaison Officer’s primary function is to serve as a conduit between parents, educators and the command so that military-connected children experience a seamless transition during the transfer between schools.  Knowing that many military children move an average of every 2.9 years, School Liaison Officers can provide families with educational information to assist them as they begin their PCS planning.

The Child and Youth Education Services program supports military families with seven cores services provided by the School Liaison Officer:

1. School Transition Services (PCS Cycle):  School Liaison Officers assist families with school transfers and help “level the playing field” for military children and youth.

2. Deployment Support:  School Liaison Officers connect educators with the military deployment support system to inform them about the cycles of deployment and the tools available to assist educators in working with military children.

3. Command, School, & Community Communications:  School Liaison Officers serve as subject-matter experts for installation commanders on K-12 issues, helping to connect command, school and community resources.

4. Home School Linkage and Support:  School Liaison Officers assist military families by gathering and sharing information on home schooling issues, policies and legislation from local school districts. They also help leverage military Child and Youth Program resources to support these families.

5. Partnerships in Education (PIE):  PIE creates a volunteer network of resources to support installation and community members who have a vested interest in the success of all youth.

6. Post-Secondary Preparations:  School Liaison Officers leverage installation and school resources to provide graduating military students with access to post-secondary information and opportunities.

7. Special Needs System Navigation:  School Liaison Officers provide information about installation and community programs and services, make referrals to the Exceptional Family Member Program, and offer assistance in navigating the administrative systems within local education agencies.

Enrollment in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) provides military families with special needs consideration during the assignment process and access to support services to help navigate the medical and educational system.

The Exceptional Family Member Program has three components:

  • Identification and enrollment of a family member with special medical or educational needs
  • Assignment coordination to determine the availability of services at the projected duty station
  • Support to help families identify and access programs and services

EFMP enrollment is mandatory and required for family members with special medical or educational needs; including spouses, children and dependent adults who:

  • Require special medical services for a chronic condition such as asthma, attention deficit disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, etc.
  • Receive ongoing services from a medical specialist
  • Have significant behavioral health concerns
  • Receive early intervention or special education services through an individualized education program or individualized family service plan

Through the EFMP family support office, families can receive assistance with navigating military and community support systems. EFMP coordinators can assist service and family members with the enrollment process. Families can enroll by obtaining paperwork from the EFMP medical point of contact at their local military treatment facility. The forms for enrollment are:

Department of Defense Form 2792, "Family Member Medical Summary."
Department of Defense Form 2792-1, "Special Education/Early Intervention Summary."
Special Ed Connection, a free web-based resource available to Navy families, provides resources and tools that enable families to better understand special education requirements and available services.
Direct Step eCourses, another free web-based resource, can assist with navigating the complexities of special education laws and procedures.
Military OneSource offers assistance to families with special needs family members.

Youth Sponsorship

The Youth Sponsorship program is designed to assist young people in making the transition from one installation to another successfully. It is our goal to help incoming youth adjust and get connected with a youth sponsor at the installation. Youth Sponsors will provide information about area schools, attractions and the surrounding community. Local schools promote Youth Sponsorship through individual programs such as a Buddy System, Ambassadors, etc...  Programs are offered through classroom teachers in primary grades and the Guidance Counselors in intermediate and secondary levels. More information can be found by contacting your local school or your School Liaison Officer SLO.NSASARATOGASPRINGS.fct@navy.mil.  or by phone at: 518-886-0200 x161.

Local Child & Youth and MWR programs offer family events to encourage military family unity and to come together to interact throughout the year. Extracurricular activities such as, Seasonal festivals, Month of the Military Child events, Kid’s Fun Run & Back to School event, Trick or Treating and the Children’s New Year’s Eve party are some highlights of our year.

WPNSTA Yorktown - Main NEX

Mission

Established in 1946, our mission is to provide customers with quality goods and services at a savings and to support Navy quality of life programs. The retail stores and many services offered by the NEX makes it an important quality of life benefit to customers... active duty, family members, retirees, national guard, and reservists, around the world, both ashore and at sea.

NEX Stores

NEXs, found on Navy installations worldwide, offers a wide variety of products and services to authorized customers. They offer prestige brands, national mass brands, and private brands, all at significant savings. NEX offers quality, value, and savings and is committed to delivering low prices every day on the merchandise and services customers want and need.  On average, customers save more than 20 percent, not including sales tax, when shopping at a NEX.

Seventy percent of our profits are contributed to MWR. The remaining 30 percent is retained by the organization to build new stores as well as fund renovations and other capital and major improvement projects. In fact, since 1946, the NEX has contributed over $2.3 billion to MWR. A listing of all NEX locations worldwide can be found here.
